In Australia, in excess of 193,000 direct jobs have been supported and more than $30 billion direct expenditure has been generated by the business event sector in 2015/16, according to research by Ernst and Young. Today, as part of Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID), advocacy will be undertaken to celebrate the contribution of the meetings and events industry all around the world. Conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions have strong benefits to the economy and longer term social benefits for our community.

International business events are platforms for face-to-face contact, which develop collaborative relationships and networks. This global cooperation drives innovation and helps shape the nation’s prosperity. Business events foster breakthroughs across sectors spanning health, technology, professional services, through to space science.

Watch Professor Michael Boyer AM explore how ground breaking health breakthroughs are developed, to give hope to people around the world:

Why meetings matter?

"The high-yield economic benefits of hosting business events are key contributors to the government's economic diplomacy agenda, and are highly effective vehicles for driving industry growth, which is in keeping with the government's trade and investment priority areas." - Former Minister for Trade and Investment, The Hon Andrew Robb AO MP.

“Human interaction will continue to be the source of networks, the source of innovation, the source of deep collaborative activity. And so conferences are essential; conferences are where we develop our partnerships, where we spot new ideas.” - Professor Roy Green, Dean of the UTS Business School, University of Technology, Sydney.

Business Event Sydney proudly supports the Meetings Mean Business alliance in the US, by celebrating Global Meetings Industry Day. To learn about transformative business events, read these case studies, or for more information about the industry, visit Association of Australian Convention Bureaux.
